Bass Trap

What I identified with regard to U2 instrumentals on “Things To Make And Do” holds fairly true here, with warm bass tones, swirling slides and ringing guitar all making for something ethereal. Unfortunately, the circular nature of the piece and its lack of dynamic means that, really, that can be the polite way of putting it. “Bass Trap” is essentially one of the few, indeed possibly the only, U2 track(s) that I could envisage being played in a health spa or massage parlour, for example. Overall, it makes for a track that isn’t bad, but doesn’t really offend and ultimately can be forgettable. It’s just as well, then, that it b-sides the far superior (and non-instrumental) “Unforgettable Fire” single, and also wise that it was trimmed to three and a half minutes when put on the relevant Best Of. The original is over five minutes; to throw out all pretension here, that’s just too damn long.
